Viceroy Cigarettes were originally made in the U.S. in 1936 as the world's first cork-tipped filter cigarette. In 1952 it was the first brand to add a cellulose acetate filter establishing a new cigarette industry standard. Later on in 1953 Reynolds America Inc. introduced Viceroy Filter Kings in 1953. Viceroy Box Kings and Lights Box Kings were introduced to U.S. customers in 1990, and were followed by the newer Viceroy Ultra Lights Kings and Ultra Lights 100's which came out in 1992. Later on, in 2000 this same company also released Viceroy 100's box styles, and Viceroy Menthol. All Viceroy styles changed to a more contemporary packaging on packs and cartons without changes to the products great tobacco blend.
After Brown and Williamson merged together, the Viceroy Cigarettes brand was played down a little, yet continued to be sold on some markets where demand for it stayed strong. These markets include Romania, the Middle East, Turkey and Argentine.
